Letter to Jeremy Corbyn: Draft (including updates subsequently sent by Michael):
From Democafe Camden: www.democafe.uk
Dear Jeremy Corbyn
Congratulations on becoming the leader of the Labour Party! The membership of Democafe-Camden is particularly concerned with the democratic deficit and we are therefore especially pleased that so many young people, who were previously disengaged from politics, have been attracted by your campaign and by what you have to offer. We are happy that at last the Labour Party is offering a genuinely alternative political programme.
The members of our group include supporters of the Labour Party and the Green Party, but also people who hold no allegiance to any of the established parties and who work outside the mainstream political framework. Nevertheless we all see your election to leadership of the Labour Party as a positive development in shaking up the established political order and in giving much-needed fresh relevance to political debate in this country. The vitriolic reaction of sections of the press to your election only goes to show that the old order is thoroughly unsettled and we believe this can only be a good thing.
Members of Democafe-Camden have recently researched and written a position paper on Housing entitled “A Place to Live: http://www.democafe.uk/blog/2015/09/26/housing-a-place-to-live/”. See also previous papers here: http://www.democafe.uk/campaigns/
We are currently organising a community pop-up event in Camden which, utilising the skills of a number of practising artists in our group, will present this paper to the public in a visually-striking and thought-provoking way. We hope, in this way, to draw people in and provoke discussion on this vital issue, so important of itself but which also conditions, alas at the moment adversely, the overall shape of the UK economy. We will keep your team posted as to the details of the event just as soon as the date and venue have been finalised.
Meantime, may we invite you and your team to visit us on our website www.democafe.uk and learn more about us?
With all best wishes,
Democafe-Camden
